Lemon terraces stacked above the Tyrrhenian
A restored convent and its garden, three hundred metres above the water, reached by a funicular cut into the cliff.
The building was a Carthusian convent from 1541 until Napoleon dissolved it. It spent the next century as a lemon farm, and the terraces are still worked.
Restoration took six years and involved rather more archaeologists than architects. The cloister, the cistern, and the frescoed refectory are all original.
The lemons are sfusato amalfitano, and they go into everything: the granita, the oil, and about four hundred litres of limoncello a year.
