The far west, where the road runs out
A Victorian shooting lodge and fourteen bothies on the most westerly point of the British mainland, held in nine hundred acres of regenerating oak.
Ardnamurchan is a single-track road for the last forty kilometres, and it takes longer than you expect. This is the point.
The estate was overgrazed for two centuries. Since 2009 we have taken the deer down and put four hundred thousand native trees in — oak, birch, hazel, aspen — and the Atlantic rainforest is coming back.
Pine marten, golden eagle, and otter are all resident. There are no streetlights within thirty kilometres.
