Lake Pūkaki, Canterbury · New Zealand
Glacier water, and the mountain behind it
Eighteen timber and glass lodges on the eastern shore of Lake Pūkaki, facing Aoraki across forty kilometres of turquoise.
Lake Pūkaki is that colour because of rock flour — glacial silt ground so fine it stays suspended and scatters light back as turquoise.
The lodges are built from Southland beech and glass, half-buried in the moraine so they read as low ridges from the water. Each faces the mountain.
This is an International Dark Sky Reserve, one of the largest on earth. Every lodge has a skylight over the bed and a telescope in the hall.
