Northern Raa Atoll · Maldives
A house reef you can reach from the bedroom
Thirty-six overwater and beach villas on a single island, ringed by a reef shelf that drops to blue forty metres out.
The island is nine hundred metres long and, at its widest, two hundred across. You can walk it in twenty minutes, and most guests do so at least twice a day.
The house reef is the reason to come. It starts at the shore, runs shallow for eighty metres, then falls away. Mantas pass through from May to November.
There is no plastic on the island. Water is desalinated and bottled in glass on site, and the roof of the plant is entirely photovoltaic.
