Sayan Ridge, Bali · Indonesia
A river valley, a rice terrace, and very little else
Twenty-eight pavilions terraced down the Ayung gorge, wrapped in bamboo and cooled by the river running below.
The Sayan ridge falls away into the Ayung valley in a series of ledges that farmers have worked as rice terraces for eleven centuries. We built on four of them, and left the rest planted.
The architecture is bamboo and volcanic stone, drawn by a Balinese studio in Gianyar. Roofs are alang-alang thatch, rebuilt by hand every seven years.
The kitchen garden supplies most of what you eat. What it does not, the Sunday market in Payangan does.
